COD Piece September 2011
“COD Piece” – September, 2011
Greetings, fellow ABATE Members! I’m going to give this Chapter Article idea another shot, but I’m going to try not to run away with myself this time. On my last attempt, I ended up coming up with a posting one-third longer than the Tiger Tales articles I submit to the ABATE Biker Journal. I apologize for anybody having problems slogging through the July submission, but I hope you found it interesting and informative. I can’t guarantee I’ll come up with one every month, but I’ll try to stay motivated enough to produce one regularly! To be honest, I really should’ve written one in August, since I basically have been running between Air Conditioners with the extremely hot weather we’ve been experiencing. I hope all of you enjoyed a happy and safe Labor Day Weekend, and are getting out and about with the cooler temperatures we’ve been enjoying in OKC since this past Sunday! It sure is nice to go in the backyard with my dogs in the morning and enjoy a cup of coffee while it’s 56 degrees.
I’d like to give a hearty COD Welcome to some of our new members who have joined our Chapter over the last couple of months: Robert Dodson, Keith War Eagle, Ken and Surana Hallum, Neal Wright, Hugh Langston, Dale and Boots Enright, David and Gloria Herbert, and James and Hollie Parman. It’s taken a few weeks for the State to catch up with the paperwork, but I’ve got you listed on the latest Roster I received in late July. Thanks very much for your commitment to Riding Freedom in our state and Nationwide-I look forward to meeting those of you I haven’t had the privilege of knowing yet, and hope our paths cross soon! Please let me know if you haven’t gotten your membership packet with your card and patch in a timely manner, and we Chapter Officers will ensure that you do so. I’ve updated my e-mail list of COD Members, so hopefully you’ve gotten the mailing I sent out right after Labor Day with my September Tiger Tales article and the Meeting Agenda for the Thursday, Sept. 8 Meeting starting at 7:00PM at the Skyline Restaurant. For those who haven’t attended one yet, we meet in the front part of the restaurant, located on S.E. 15th St., ¼ mile east of I-35 in Oklahoma City.
For those who haven’t been following our progress, COD has been involved in a bunch of improvements over the last few months. In addition to our Chapter’s membership increasing to close to 80, our meeting attendance is improving, and we’re striving to obtain guest speakers to add to what we try to make an educational and informative experience for all. On Sept 8, we’ll be honored to have Outlaw Yoda 1%er join us. He is one of the candidates for First Chair of the OK Confederation of Clubs, which I’m proud to be part of as ABATE Liaison. He’s going to share with us his background and vision for the OK COC, just as Bandido Steve-O 1%er had at our meeting a couple of months ago. All five candidates for the position are dedicated motorcyclists passionately committed to preserving Freedom and this special lifestyle, so the future of the OK COC looks bright indeed! The ABATE State Board will decide which candidate to support at its monthly meeting this Saturday, starting 10:30AM at the Hometown Buffet on N.W. 63rd St. in OKC. All ABATE Members can attend the State Board Meetings, and you really should check one out sometime if you haven’t yet. Also, for anybody interested, the next OK COC meeting (and First Chair Elections) will take place Sunday, Sept. 11, starting 1:00PM at VFW Post 1098 in Krebs, which is just outside McAlester. All ABATE Members are invited to attend, and you can obtain more information by checking out the Confederation Website at: www.okcoc.net
Jon Kirchen, our Treasurer, Membership Chair and Webmaster, has done a lot of good work for a long time in supporting COD’s success. Log onto our Chapter website at www.codabate.org if you haven’t yet, and see what he’s done. You can also link to the Chapter Website from the State site, www.abateofoklahoma.org where you can find a bunch of terrific information, including archived PDF issues of the ABATE Biker Journal Newspapers. In addition to fleshing out the Chapter Website, we’re expanding a COD Facebook Page, and all COD Chapter Members are encouraged to join the ABATE Members Yahoo Group to share ideas and communicate with other Chapters. E-mail Moderator Carol King at tulsavicrider@aol.com , let her know who you are, and she’ll get you started. Stick, our Events Coordinator, and his wife Rose have spearheaded getting awesome Chapter T-Shirts which feature the large State Logo on the back and a small COD Logo on the front left. They look really sharp, and are reasonably priced-just e-mail Stick at wizzardproduction@yahoo.com for more information, and you can purchase them at Chapter meetings.
Well, that’ll do it for this submission. I very much look forward to seeing a large number of you in the future at some of our upcoming ABATE events. We’re still in the process of planning at least one more Chapter event before the year is out, so we’ll be hammering out details at our meetings. Special occasions to look forward to include ABATE’s “Party on the Plains” Sept 30-Oct 2 in Enid (where COD has volunteered to work the ABATE Booth and Paintball Challenge), and the Mid-South MILE Biker Rights Seminars Oct 21-23 at the Holiday Inn in Joplin, MO. COD has paid $100 for all our members to attend, so please make plans to join us. Go to www.midsouthmile.org for more information. Take care, Ride Free, Safely, Sober and Aware, and I’ll see you down the Road!

COD Piece July 2011
Hello, Fellow CODers! I'm taking a crack at sending out a brief monthly update
to the Chapter Membership I have e-mail addresses on, so let me know if it's
something worth continuing, and feel free to pass it on to your friends if you'd
like. First, if you're new to ABATE's Central OK District, I'd like to welcome
you to our Chapter! Our next Chapter Meeting is scheduled for this Thursday,
July 14 (which is the day before my Birthday!), starting at 7:00PM. We hold
our meetings at the Skyline Restaurant, located on S.E. 15th Street, 1/4 mile
east of I-35. If you've never been there, they have a pretty good menu of food
offerings at reasonable prices. Our annual COD Bike Parades on Memorial Day
and Veterans Day depart from their parking lot every year. You'll find attached
the Meeting Agenda for this month, and that should give you an idea not only
of what to expect, but also of what a diversified group of topics we address.
Our COD Chapter Meetings are rarely boring!
I was able to go to the Downed Bikers Association this past Monday night, along
with Stick, our Historian and Chapter Rep along with Bus. We brought ABATE Biker
Journal newspapers, which were well-received at the meeting, and DBA is going
to distribute a stack. I got to give them an ABATE Update, and they appreciated
us being there. At the Oklahoma Confederation Of Clubs Meeting in Chickasha
this past Sunday, the decision was made to open nominations for FIRST CHAIR,
instead of Second Chair. At present, five OK COC member groups submitted nominations.
One of them, Bandido Steve-O 1%er, spoke at the DBA Meeting. I invited him to
address our COD ABATE Meeting, and he agreed to attend and say a few words to
our Chapter about his candidacy. Bandido Steve-O has been a longtime supporter
of ABATE and our goals. So, we’re blessed to have him spend some time
with us, along with Mary Chartney, who is Motorcycle Events Coordinator for
the “HUGS Project”. I hope we’ll have a good Chapter attendance
Thursday night-be sure to invite your friends over the next couple of days.
June was a very active month for our Chapter. At our June 9 Chapter Meeting,
the Keynote Speaker was Terri "T" Collier, Editor of Thunder Roads
Oklahoma Magazine. She also serves as one of the newest members of the Oklahoma
State Motorcycle Advisory Council, in keeping with legislation ABATE helped
get passed during the 2010 Session. She gave us a bunch of valuable information
on how the Council works, as well as latest developments regarding her magazine,
which reaches a large number of our Riding Community. She also took a group
photo of our Chapter Meeting attendees, which appears in this month's issue
of Thunder Roads! I wrote an ABATE Update article for Thunder Roads for around
seven years-that responsibility is now undertaken by our State Coordinator.
COD staffed the ABATE Booth, along with our neighboring Heartland Chapter, at
the OK COC's Old-Fashioned Biker Rally June 10-12 at Hawg Lakes. Stick and I
had to attend the ABATE State Board Meeting June 11 in Muskogee, so we headed
back through a huge storm to finish enjoying the event. There was a full slate
of events scheduled, including live music and a Bike Show. A number of vendors
were there, including Confederate Joe who sewed a bunch of patches on my vest
that I needed done. The ABATE Booth also put on a 50/50 Drawing, which was won
by a member of the Christian Motorcyclist Association. TrykeMike of the Heartland
Chapter worked so hard selling tickets that COD, in an atmosphere of Brotherhood
and cooperation, split ABATE's proceeds equally between our two Chapters. Additionally,
the 50/50 Winner donated twenty dollars to each of our Chapters--I thought that
was pretty righteous!
We held our COD Chapter Fundraiser Poker Run June 25, and it also left out of
the Skyline Parking Lot just as it was getting really hot (I think that's the
only type of weather we're going to have in Oklahoma for awhile!). As we usually
find nowadays, there were at least three competing events going on, so we were
glad to have around 15 people show up. It was an Observation Run with everybody
riding as a group, and our Road Captain was Mark "Bus" Buskirk, our
Primary Chapter Rep. Fortunately, we were able to find nice shade or air conditioning
at every stop, and folks were able to stay hydrated. After leaving the Skyline,
everybody headed up I-35 to the Rockaway on Seward Rd. and Sooner north of Edmond.
While there, we saw a bunch of riders on a Cancer Awareness Poker Run, and I
said hello to Yankee, one of my old friends from the Hog Chapter. That's where
I found out that her 18 year-old daughter died of cancer. Please remember Yankee
and her family in your prayers. From there, we went to a nice park in downtown
Guthrie, the Pumpjack out on HWY 33 (which is owned by Murray, who used to own
the Rockaway--I thought he retired!), and we ended the Run at Scott and Deb's
Sports Bar in Kingfisher. For those who have never been there, Scott and Deb
(who are ABATE NW69 Chapter Members) are wonderful folks who have a nice, remodeled
place with a huge backyard area with trees and a band area and barbeque. Scott
and Deb also are terrific cooks, and they made falling-off-the-bone Baby Back
Ribs and Corn on the Cob. Yummy!! The Poker Run Winner received a cash prize,
and we also gave away a Pulsar digital watch. This was our Sweepstakes event,
which unfortunately wasn't won by an ABATE Member. Every ABATE Chapter has one
event during the year where the winner's name is put into a Grand Prize Drawing
for a ONE THOUSAND DOLLAR Prize at the Oklahoma SMILE ABATE Meeting at Quartz
Mtn. Resort in January. You must be an ABATE Member to be included. Last year,
COD's own Mark Tracey, our past Vice-President, won the money! Many thanks to
Bus for doing a great job as Road Captain, and to Ripper Bailey, "D-Rail"
Eagleberger (our Sgt-at-Arms), and Stick, our Events Coordinator, for organizing
a successful event, even though it could've been better-attended. We certainly
appreciate everybody that turned out, especially the Naysayers Motorcycle Club,
longtime ABATE Supporters who showed up in force! COD plans to capitalize on
our improved relations with Biker-Friendly facilities throughout the OKC Metro
to host more and varied events to get ABATE's Mission and the Central OK District
better publicized!
Wow--I ended up writing an article about as long as my monthly "Tiger Tales"
in the ABATE Biker Journal newspaper! I like to think that it's not just because
I'm long-winded, but more because we have so many good things going on in the
ABATE Central OK District, thanks to a number of dedicated Chapter Members who
are committed to defending Biker Liberty in our state, and work hard and have
fun doing it. Be sure to keep up on what's happening by checking out the COD
Chapter website at www.codabate.org as well as the State website at www.abateofoklahoma.org
I expect Jon Kirchen, our esteemed Chapter Treasurer and Webmaster, might want
to post these "COD Pieces" on the Chapter website as well. Have a
good July, keep cool and stay hydrated, Ride Free and Safely, and I very much
look forward to seeing my Chapter Brothers and Sisters down the Road, especially
those I haven't had the pleasure of meeting yet!! Don't hesitate to contact
me if you have any questions or comments.
Yours in Liberty,

Update 01/21/2011 Jon
All in all what a great year 2010 was. Legislative records where we can make great inroads. We are going to concentrate on biker education. The first item listed in the Abate mission. Check the state website for details.
There are lots coming up this year and we need to plan ahead. Check out our chapter meetings to get involved.
May is motorcycle safety awareness month. Start thinking of what we need to be doing then.
1) Updated the home page for the legislative breakfast.
2) Updated the events pages for past events and the upcoming legislative breakfast.
3) We have pictures for our Toy Run so check those out. Wahoo..
3) Updated the meeting page for agenda which I don't have a copy for the next meting. I removed the bad link. I also updated the minutes because I don't have current electronic copies. I removed the link. However our minutes are published in the Biker Journal so you can get them from there. Links to the biker Journal are current.
4) Updated the Abate of Oklahoma Journals archive (pdf) for our members to download for free (as always). And we are always looking for members to help distribute the AOBJ. I don't want to duplicate what the State site is doing so I am just providing an archive for easy download. We are working on that site as well.
You can check out the few pictures that we have and more information about the event in our events section.
